Token

In short A token is a digital asset issued by a smart contract on an existing blockchain, as opposed to a coin, which is the native currency of its own chain.

A token is a digital asset that lives on top of an existing blockchain instead of running its own. A coin like ETH, SOL, or BNB is the native currency of its chain and pays for transaction fees. A token is created by a smart contract deployed on that chain, and it can represent almost anything: a stablecoin, a governance vote, an in-game item, or just a meme.

Mechanically, a token contract is a ledger. It stores a list of addresses and their balances, plus the rules for moving them. When you send tokens, your wallet calls the contract's transfer function and the contract updates the two balances. Standards define a common interface so wallets, exchanges, and block explorers can handle any token automatically: ERC-20 on Ethereum and Base, BEP-20 on BNB Chain, and the SPL token standard on Solana. You still need a little of the chain's native coin to pay gas, even when you only hold tokens.

The practical catch is that creating a token takes minutes and costs very little, so thousands appear every day, and the quality varies enormously. A token behaves exactly as its contract code says, no more and no less. The code may allow the owner to mint new supply, pause transfers, blacklist addresses, or take a cut of every trade. The name and ticker mean nothing on their own, because anyone can deploy a token called anything, and the same name on two different chains is two different assets.

Before buying, find the contract address from a source you trust, such as the project's official channels, and paste it into a block explorer. Check the total supply, how many wallets hold it, what share the top holders control, and whether the owner can still change the contract. Confirm that real liquidity exists and ideally that it is locked. Also be careful with approvals: trading often means letting a contract spend your tokens, and an unlimited approval stays active until you revoke it. Copycat tokens that imitate popular names, and tokens you can buy but not sell, are the most common traps.
