The Proof of Time Blockchain

Introduction

Obsidian Network is an independent Layer 1 blockchain built around Proof of Time (PoT), designed to coordinate block production through protocol time and a deterministic producer schedule rather than proof-of-work mining competitions.

Powered by its native digital asset, Obsidian Seal Coin (OBS), the network combines blockchain consensus, peer-to-peer networking, cryptographically signed transactions, protocol-level mining claims, digital payments, decentralized naming, and node-runner rewards within a shared on-chain state.

Obsidian Network is designed so that its core rules are enforced by the blockchain itself, rather than by a website, centralized database, or interface. Nodes independently validate transactions and blocks, while applications and interfaces read verified network data and provide accessible ways for users to interact with the protocol.

The project also includes a browser-based wallet, mining interface, blockchain explorer, web applications, and node software, with separate mainnet, testnet, staging, and development networks.

About Obsidian Network

Obsidian Network is a blockchain infrastructure project focused on making protocol-driven digital transactions, mining participation, and on-chain services accessible through an independently verifiable network.

Its Proof of Time design uses protocol time, a deterministic block-producer schedule, cryptographic signatures, and defined fork-choice and finality rules. Unlike proof-of-work systems, block production does not depend on solving computational hash puzzles. Network participants follow the protocol's rules to produce, validate, and synchronize blocks.

The blockchain maintains its own state, including account balances, transaction nonces, mining claims, the Mining Pool, .obs domain records, oracle price observations, node registrations, node-runner rewards, and finality checkpoints.

Obsidian's architecture separates the consensus layer from its applications. Websites, APIs, indexes, and caches provide access to the network, but they do not independently determine the validity of transactions, create OBS, or override the blockchain's state.

The project aims to support an evolving ecosystem of wallets, payment services, blockchain naming, digital marketplaces, developer integrations, and other applications built on its protocol.

About Obsidian Seal Coin (OBS)

Obsidian Seal Coin (OBS) is the native cryptocurrency of Obsidian Network. It is the digital asset used within the blockchain's transaction, mining, and application ecosystem.

OBS supports value transfers between wallets, protocol-defined mining rewards, transaction fees, and payments associated with supported on-chain services. It also provides the native economic unit for the Obsidian Name Service (ONS) and its marketplace.

Supply and issuance

  • Maximum supply: 21,000,000 OBS.
  • Initial supply at genesis: 0 OBS.
  • Genesis allocation: 100,000 OBS, awarded exactly once to the wallet behind the first protocol-valid mining claim.
  • Mining rewards: Initially 0.001 OBS per day per eligible wallet, distributed through protocol-validated claims.
  • Issuance control: The protocol enforces the maximum supply and restricts issuance to the defined genesis allocation and mining-reward mechanisms.

The wallet receiving the one-time genesis allocation becomes the on-chain treasury wallet. This is not a premine assigned to a founder at genesis, and account registration does not automatically grant OBS.

Mining OBS

Mining on Obsidian Network is a protocol-based claim mechanism, not a computational hashrate competition. Eligible wallets can submit signed claims when permitted by blockchain time and the network's mining rules.

The documented schedule allows one claim every four hours, up to six claims per 24-hour cycle. At launch, the daily reward is 0.001 OBS, with a planned reduction of 0.5% for every 100,000 active miners and a hard minimum of 0.0002 OBS per day.

Mining eligibility and rewards are determined by protocol state. The documented mining-gate mechanism also requires a valid certificate from an authorized issuer before a claim can be accepted.

Transaction fees

OBS transfers use a protocol-defined gas mechanism. The documented standard fee is 0.02% of the transferred amount, capped at 0.01 OBS, with the minimum gas and transfer rules specified by the current protocol release.

Transaction fees are returned to the Mining Pool, which funds mining rewards, rather than being paid directly to a company or founder.

Proof of Time (PoT)

Proof of Time is the defining consensus approach of Obsidian Network. It uses protocol time and a deterministic producer schedule to coordinate block production.

The protocol documents a five-second target block interval and a fork-choice mechanism based on the finalized anchor, cumulative PoT Weight, block height, and block hash. Cryptographic signatures and block commitments allow nodes to verify the identity of producers and the integrity of the chain.

The protocol also derives finality from established producers building on the chain. Its security and finality guarantees depend on the implemented rules and the participating network; Proof of Time should not be interpreted as a guarantee of absolute immutability.

Obsidian ecosystem

Obsidian Wallet: A non-custodial wallet experience for creating wallets locally, managing OBS, signing transactions, and interacting with supported blockchain services. The documented wallet generation process uses cryptographically secure random entropy and encrypts the wallet with the user's passphrase.

Obsidian Mining: An interface for checking mining eligibility, signing and submitting claims, viewing reward information, and interacting with the protocol's mining schedule.

Obsidian Explorer: A blockchain exploration interface for inspecting blocks, transactions, and .obs naming records from network data.

Obsidian Name Service (ONS): A blockchain naming system using .obs names. Its protocol supports name registration, renewal, ownership transfers, recovery operations, and other defined name-management functions.

ONS Marketplace: An on-chain marketplace for listing names, changing listing prices, delisting names, purchasing listed names, and managing offers through protocol escrow.

Obsidian Nodes: Node software responsible for blockchain synchronization, transaction processing, peer-to-peer networking, state execution, validation, and the protocol's producer and reward mechanisms.

Node Runner Rewards: A protocol-defined reward system associated with ONS revenue. The documented revenue split allocates 90% to the Node Runner Reward Pool and 10% to the treasury wallet. Node rewards are determined by protocol-defined performance and participation rules.

Developer Infrastructure: APIs, transaction encoding and signing tools, network interfaces, documentation, and integration components intended to support applications built on Obsidian Network.

Network architecture

Obsidian Network documents four isolated network environments:

  • Mainnet — Chain ID 7777; address prefix obs.
  • Testnet — Chain ID 7778; address prefix tobs.
  • Staging — Chain ID 7779; address prefix sobs.
  • Devnet — Chain ID 7780; address prefix dobs.

Each network has its own genesis identity, configuration, and chain state. Nodes reject incompatible networks rather than silently combining their data.

Vision

To build a blockchain ecosystem where protocol time, transparent state transitions, and decentralized participation provide the foundation for digital assets and on-chain applications.

Mission

To develop and maintain accessible blockchain infrastructure that enables verifiable transactions, protocol-driven mining, non-custodial asset management, decentralized naming, and an expanding ecosystem of developer and user applications.

Closing statement

Obsidian Network is more than a digital currency. It is a blockchain infrastructure project built around Proof of Time, with Obsidian Seal Coin (OBS) serving as its native asset and a growing set of protocol-level services built directly on its state.

Its long-term direction is to connect blockchain infrastructure, digital payments, mining participation, naming services, and application development through one independently verifiable network.
