Bitcoin Recovers to $80,000 as Democratic Win in Congress Triggers Squeeze of Short Sellers
Coinvote tarafından

Bitcoin recovered from an election-night low of $75,600 to trade near $80,000 as short sellers were squeezed after Democrats won both chambers of Congress. Analysts call the result priced in, but it clouds the path for the CLARITY Act and U.S. crypto legislation.
Bitcoin climbs back after a sharp election-night dip
Bitcoin recovered quickly after Democrats won the House and the Senate in the U.S. midterms. According to Bitcoin Magazine, the price bottomed at $75,600 in the 10 p.m. ET hour on Tuesday, when results showed Democrats taking both chambers. It peaked in the 10 a.m. hour on Wednesday, a swing of about 7.3% in roughly 12 hours.
By mid-afternoon on Wednesday, Bitcoin Magazine put bitcoin at $80,099, up about 3% on the day. The Block reported a 3.5% gain to $80,500, and ether rose about 6% in the same report. CoinDesk described the move as a post-election rebound in which bitcoin held above $80,000 and Zcash gained 12%.
A short squeeze did much of the work
Bitcoin Magazine attributed the climb to forced buying by traders who had bet on lower prices. When prices rise, short positions are closed out automatically, and those closures add buying pressure on top of any fresh demand. The outlet cited the following liquidation figures.
- Roughly $950 million of leveraged crypto positions were forced out of the market during a 24-hour period.
- Bets against prices made up $560 million of that total.
- Bitcoin positions accounted for $403 million, and 76% of those were shorts.
- CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju wrote on X that bitcoin shorts worth $215 million were wiped out within one hour.
Why analysts call the sweep priced in
Decrypt quoted several analysts who said the outcome was largely expected. André Dragosch of Bitwise Europe pointed to Polymarket odds of 65.5% for a Democratic sweep at the start of the week. He said sentiment was already very bearish and that seller exhaustion had been visible, which explained the V-shaped intraday recovery.
James Butterfill of CoinShares made the same case, saying the sweep left room for a relief rally once uncertainty cleared. Lumida CEO Ram Ahluwalia had described a similar path before the vote, according to Bitcoin Magazine. He called it a one-and-done washout that resets asset prices.
Heslin Kim of Zenith told Decrypt that crypto policy did not decide the midterms. He listed the economy, gas prices, the Iran situation and unmet promises as the drivers, and said crypto now carries baggage tied to the Trump family.
Legislation gets harder even if prices do not react
The price reaction and the policy outlook point in different directions. According to Bitcoin Magazine, TD Cowen's Jaret Seiberg wrote that passing the CLARITY Act with crypto industry backing is now "impossible" after the sweep. The outlet added that Democrats take control of the committees with jurisdiction over crypto in January. Decrypt noted that the bill, which would set rules for crypto markets, has been stuck since 2025 because many Democrats object to Trump's crypto conflicts of interest. BitOK CEO Dmitry Machikhin predicted it will stay in limbo well into 2027.
Existing rules are not at immediate risk, the analysts said. Dragosch told Decrypt that Democrats cannot roll back the pro-crypto guidance already issued by the SEC and CFTC. Butterfill added that the GENIUS framework does not simply disappear, though he expects U.S. exchanges, token issuers and firms that depend on new regulatory permissions to feel the result more than bitcoin does.
How the outlets' accounts compare
The reports agree on direction but differ on levels and timing. Decrypt had bitcoin at $78,277, up 1.6% over 24 hours, while Bitcoin Magazine and The Block cited prices of $80,099 and $80,500. CoinGecko data now shows bitcoin at $80,607, up 3.3% on the day, and its 30-day change is still negative at 5.8%. None of the outlets explains the gaps, which most likely reflect different publication times and measurement windows.
Ether shows a similar spread. CoinDesk reported an 8% rise, The Block 6%, and CoinGecko shows 5.6% over 24 hours with ether at $2,427. Ether is still down 10.0% over 30 days, so the rebound has not erased the earlier decline.
The coverage also differs in emphasis. Bitcoin Magazine focuses on derivatives and macro data, while Decrypt focuses on policy and the views of research heads. The Block adds that Bitwise sees limited market impact from a Binance hack, but its summary gives no further detail on that incident, so the scale and cause remain unreported here.
Oil, the dollar and fund flows set the macro backdrop
Bitcoin Magazine tied the rally to a broader risk-on move. The Dow rose about 3%, the S&P 500 gained 1.7% and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.8%. Brent crude fell more than 9% to $93.91 a barrel after Vice President JD Vance blamed the Republican losses on the Iran war, and the dollar index fell 0.55% to 101.32.
That matters, the outlet says, because oil prices above $100 had kept inflation elevated and pushed the Federal Reserve toward raising rates at its Dec. 9 decision. CoinDesk likewise credited falling oil and a weaker dollar for the recovery.
Fund demand has lagged the price. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs lost $115.6 million on Tuesday, their third straight day of outflows, with BlackRock's IBIT shedding $95 million. The three-day total is about $1.16 billion. Butterfill told Decrypt that, for bitcoin, elections matter less than real yields, dollar liquidity and flows into exchange-traded products.
What to watch next
Glassnode said bitcoin is retesting levels it broke above in August. According to Bitcoin Magazine, Glassnode identified $77,700 as the True Market Mean and $75,700 as the cost basis for short-term holders; the firm said the August uptrend remains intact if bitcoin stays above both levels. Bitcoin Magazine noted that the price is still roughly 36% under the record of about $126,080.
Several open questions follow. Will ETF buyers return now that the shorts are gone? The October jobs report arrives Friday and October CPI on Nov. 10, and both could shape the Fed debate. Investigations into Trump-linked ventures could also affect sentiment, according to Butterfill.
