Bitcoin mining services firm Luxor has raised $16 million in a round led by CMT Digital, with miner-hardware makers Canaan and MicroBT among the backers. The money targets AI hardware brokerage and compute derivatives, a young market still short of price transparency.

Luxor raises $16 million to move deeper into AI compute

Seattle-based Luxor Technology Corporation announced a $16 million strategic round on Tuesday. According to Bitcoin Magazine, CMT Digital, the venture arm of Chicago-based CMT Group, led the raise. Canaan, MicroBT, Halo, Steelhead and several angel investors also took part.

Luxor is best known for services built around bitcoin mining. It now wants to broker AI hardware and trade contracts on computing power. Decrypt called the round another example of crypto infrastructure companies shifting their focus to artificial intelligence.

The company told reporters it will spend the money in four areas. The areas are its agentic cloud platform, working capital for AI hardware sales, market making and trading in compute derivatives, plus new engineering and go-to-market staff.

From mining software to a compute trading desk

Luxor launched a business segment called Luxor AI in September. Bitcoin Magazine reported that the unit takes the tools Luxor developed for bitcoin mining, covering energy, hardware, software, data and compute trading, and applies them to AI and high-performance computing.

The logic is that miners and AI operators need much the same things. Both depend on cheap power, suitable sites, specialised machines and access to capital. Decrypt noted that miners have put their power and facilities to use for AI, and that some have agreed hyperscaler deals worth billions while others have sold bitcoin to pay for the change.

CoinDesk framed Luxor as a supplier following its customers. Mining companies are renting out computing power and converting facilities into data centers. Firms that served those miners are now trying to serve the same miners in their new line of work.

The numbers behind the round

Luxor and the outlets gave several figures that show the scale of the business it is extending.

  • Round size: $16 million, combining primary and secondary capital.
  • Hardware desk: $1 billion of ASIC hardware traded for bitcoin mining.
  • Energy arm: more than 75 megawatts of load serviced across ERCOT and SPP.
  • Cloud platform: 1.8 million workloads year to date as of September.
  • Miner software reach: Luxor's software business works with miners whose combined power capacity is close to two gigawatts, COO Ethan Vera told CoinDesk.
  • Industry backdrop: publicly listed bitcoin miners had signed AI and high-performance computing deals worth over $70 billion by the end of March, per CoinShares data cited by two outlets.

What each outlet adds, and where they differ

The Block focused on growth plans. Per Vera, Luxor aims to grow its AI operations and add roughly a dozen employees before the year closes, the outlet's summary says. The summary does not say how the hires split between engineering and sales, and the other outlets do not give a headcount.

CoinDesk added the most operating detail. Luxor assessed more than half of the nearly two gigawatts of capacity it works with and found that most sites had enough electricity and fiber for AI workloads. Those sites would still need new data centers. CoinDesk also noted that Luxor did not disclose how much of the round was new money for the company.

Bitcoin Magazine and Decrypt largely track Luxor's announcement. Bitcoin Magazine adds Luxor's pitch about sourcing GPUs and AI servers through tiered partners, including access to abandoned orders, special allocations and used markets. Decrypt emphasizes the over-the-counter desk and cites VanEck and Bernstein analysts who describe miners as surprising influencers in AI because of their access to electricity and sites.

Turning computing power into something hedgeable

The most distinctive part of the plan is financial rather than physical. Decrypt reported that Luxor's over-the-counter desk currently sells options settled in cash, forwards and backstops that reference compute-rental indexes. Such contracts let a buyer or seller agree on a price ahead of time.

CoinDesk compared this with how bitcoin miners use financial contracts to manage swings in mining revenue. In August, Luxor introduced an index tracking daily asking prices for Nvidia AI server systems. Vera told CoinDesk that transparency remains a problem, especially for hardware prices.

CMT Digital partner Sam Hallene pointed to a different risk. Expensive equipment might stay useful for longer than expected, which would change its value. "We don't know exactly what the market structure will look like at the end of the day," he told CoinDesk.

Why the investor list matters

Luxor characterized each of its backers as an operating partner within the compute supply chain it serves, covering hardware, capital and power. Bitcoin Magazine reported that CMT Digital has close to thirty years of experience in electronic trading and market structure.

Canaan CEO Nangeng Zhang said his company is seeking lasting power supplies in North America under a strategy that pairs compute with energy. He said joining Luxor's cap table fits those goals. CEO Nick Hansen summed up the company's view by saying that "compute markets are converging."

Not every miner is leaving bitcoin behind. CoinDesk pointed to Nasdaq-listed NIP Group, which announced plans to lift its mining capacity by about 48% and expects to produce about 195 bitcoin a month at full deployment.

Open questions to watch

Luxor has not disclosed how much of the $16 million went to the company itself, so the true size of the fresh capital remains unclear. It is also unknown how much volume the compute derivatives desk will handle.

Readers following miners can watch whether more mining service providers adopt compute pricing indexes, and whether published hardware benchmarks improve price transparency. Project teams and miners considering AI conversions can note CoinDesk's finding that power and fiber at many sites were adequate, while new data centers would still be required.

FAQ

Who led Luxor's $16 million funding round?

CMT Digital, the venture capital unit of Chicago's CMT Group, was the lead investor. Bitcoin Magazine and Decrypt report that Canaan, MicroBT, Halo, Steelhead and several angel investors joined as well.

What will Luxor do with the money?

Luxor plans to scale its agentic cloud platform, fund its AI hardware business, expand compute derivatives trading and market making, and hire engineering and go-to-market staff. The Block reported that it plans about 12 hires by year-end.

What are compute derivatives?

They are contracts such as options, forwards and backstops tied to compute-rental indexes. Luxor's over-the-counter desk already offers them, letting buyers and sellers agree on computing prices in advance.
