SoFi Earn Links Insured Bank Deposits to Uninsured Stablecoin Spending

SoFi has launched SOFIE, a tokenized bank deposit offering a variable 4.4% annual percentage yield and conversion into its SoFiUSD stablecoin. The product connects interest-bearing savings with crypto payments, but deposit insurance and interest stop applying when customers switch into the stablecoin.

A bank deposit with a route into crypto

SoFi Technologies announced SoFi Earn on Thursday, introducing a tokenized deposit that customers can convert into the bank’s dollar-linked stablecoin. According to Cointelegraph, each SOFIE represents $1 deposited at SoFi Bank, with no minimum balance requirement and a variable 4.4% annual percentage yield.

Customers can exchange SOFIE for SoFiUSD at equal value, then purchase crypto through the SoFi app or transfer funds to supported external wallets. Cointelegraph reported that access is being extended to SoFi Crypto members through November, with a separate SOFIE deposit account available through their crypto account.

The distinction is between holding a bank deposit and deploying a stablecoin. The product links those activities, but it does not give them identical protections.

Insurance ends at the stablecoin conversion

SOFIE deposits qualify for Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation protection, Cointelegraph reported. The applicable ceiling is $250,000 for each depositor at each insured bank, subject to the account ownership category.

The Defiant highlights the operational boundary: neither the deposit interest nor FDIC coverage accompanies funds converted into SoFiUSD. Cointelegraph also explicitly reports that SoFiUSD is uninsured, making the conversion more than a change in how the same balance is displayed.

For holders, the relevant distinction is the asset they currently own. A deposit balance eligible for insurance and a stablecoin available for blockchain transfers serve different functions, even when conversion occurs at equal value.

  • SOFIE offers a variable 4.4% annual percentage yield.
  • Each SOFIE corresponds to $1 deposited at SoFi Bank.
  • FDIC protection applies up to $250,000 within the stated depositor, bank and ownership-category limits.
  • SoFiUSD does not carry FDIC coverage.

SoFi targets dollars waiting to be used

Decrypt places the launch within SoFi’s effort to attract digital dollars that otherwise earn no interest. It reported that SoFi cited Federal Reserve research estimating roughly $64 billion, or about 21% of the stablecoin market, was held in forgotten or inactive wallets.

That estimate describes the opportunity cited by the company, not money committed to SOFIE. SoFi’s proposition is that customers can earn deposit interest while waiting to use their funds, then convert when they want crypto access or blockchain transfers.

The mechanism separates the waiting period from the spending period. Interest belongs to the deposit stage, while SoFiUSD supplies the transfer and purchasing functionality after conversion. The quoted yield is variable rather than a fixed promise about future earnings.

The reports agree on the product but add different detail

The Block describes the same core launch: an interest-bearing, FDIC-insured tokenized deposit with a SoFiUSD conversion option. Its summary and The Defiant’s summary align with the fuller accounts on the product’s central features, while The Defiant specifically emphasizes what customers lose on conversion.

Cointelegraph adds the minimum-balance policy, insurance ceiling and rollout schedule. It also recalls reporting in May that SoFi planned an interest-bearing tokenized deposit after bringing SoFiUSD into its consumer banking app, when the company said the feature would arrive in the coming weeks.

Decrypt contributes the commercial rationale and broader product history. It reports that SoFi describes SOFIE as the first consumer tokenized deposit issued by a national bank. That characterization is the company’s claim, rather than a separate conclusion established by the other accounts.

Another link in SoFi’s digital-money business

Decrypt reported that SoFi Earn is the company’s fifth crypto product introduced in under a year. It places the launch after SoFi’s return to crypto trading in late 2025 and reports that members can trade more than 40 tokens.

The same account says SoFiUSD launched on Ethereum and Solana and is used to settle SoFi’s entire card program through Mastercard’s network. Those details explain why the conversion option matters beyond earning interest: SOFIE connects a deposit product to an existing stablecoin operation.

For crypto project teams assessing payment arrangements, the useful distinction is between access to blockchain-based dollars and the protections attached to the underlying holding. A bank-issued stablecoin does not acquire deposit insurance simply because its issuer also offers an insured deposit product.

Rollout and regulatory implementation remain in focus

The immediate milestone is the rollout to SoFi Crypto members through November, as reported by Cointelegraph. Account availability and support for external wallets are practical details for customers checking how the announced conversion path works for them.

According to Cointelegraph, a final rule released on Wednesday by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency covers the issuance of payment stablecoins and some custody activities. Its account places the GENIUS Act framework’s effective date in mid-January.

That regulatory development accompanies the launch, but the reporting does not establish that it caused SoFi’s announcement. The open commercial question is whether customers use SOFIE to hold funds between crypto transactions, as the company intends, while the variable yield and the uninsured status of SoFiUSD remain distinct considerations.

FAQ

Is SoFi Earn the same as SoFiUSD?

No. SOFIE represents money deposited at SoFi Bank and offers variable interest with applicable FDIC protection. Customers can convert it into SoFiUSD, which is a stablecoin without FDIC insurance.

Does SOFIE keep earning interest after conversion?

The Defiant reports that deposit interest does not continue after funds move into SoFiUSD. The conversion also ends the deposit’s FDIC protection for those funds.

When will SoFi Crypto members get access to SOFIE?

Cointelegraph reports that access is rolling out through November. Members reach the separate SOFIE deposit account through their SoFi Crypto account.
