Multisig

In short A multisig is a wallet that needs several separate keys to approve a transaction, such as 3 of 5 signers, instead of one private key.

A multisig, short for multi-signature, is a wallet that requires approval from more than one key before funds can move. It is described as M of N: a 2 of 3 multisig has three possible signers and any two must agree. No single person can spend from it alone.

How it works depends on the chain. Bitcoin supports multisig natively in its scripting system. On Ethereum and other EVM chains, a multisig is a smart contract wallet, such as a Safe, that holds the funds and only executes a transaction once enough owners have signed. Solana has its own multisig programs that work on the same principle. Projects commonly use multisigs to hold the treasury, own token contracts, control upgradeable proxies, or keep the keys to liquidity locks.

For token buyers, a multisig changes who can do what. If a contract's owner is a single wallet, one person, or one stolen key, can mint, change taxes, or pull funds. If ownership sits in a multisig with independent signers, a bad action needs several people to cooperate or be compromised. That is a real improvement, but it is not a promise of safety.

Check the details rather than the label. See how many signers there are, what the threshold is, and whether the signers are actually different people or just several wallets controlled by the same team. A 1 of 3 multisig is effectively a single key. Look for a timelock that delays sensitive actions so holders can react, and keep in mind that a multisig controlled entirely by anonymous team members can still act together against holders.
