FUD

In short FUD stands for fear, uncertainty, and doubt: negative claims, true or false, that push people to sell a token or avoid it.

FUD stands for fear, uncertainty, and doubt. The term comes from sales and marketing, where it described spreading vague negative claims about a competitor. Crypto adopted it as shorthand for any negative news or rumor that makes people sell or stay away. The label gets applied to everything from a baseless Telegram rumor to a documented exploit, which is why it is such a slippery word.

FUD works through speed and ambiguity. A post claims the team is dumping, the contract is unsafe, or an exchange is insolvent, and holders sell before anyone verifies it. In small tokens with thin liquidity, a handful of sells can move the price a lot, so a rumor can become self-fulfilling even if it was false. Sometimes it is deliberate: someone sells or shorts a position, then spreads a story to push the price down.

The word also gets abused in the other direction. Project teams and loud holders often call legitimate criticism FUD to shut down questions, such as why the deployer wallet holds a large share of supply or why liquidity is not locked. If a claim can be checked on-chain, calling it FUD does not answer it. In a busy chat, a real warning and FUD can look identical at first.

The practical test is whether the claim is specific and verifiable. A block explorer shows holder distribution, deployer transfers, and contract ownership, and an audit report or the contract code shows what the owner is able to do. Check who is making the claim, whether they profit from you selling, and whether they link evidence or just post screenshots. Be equally wary of a project that answers every question with "that's FUD" and never produces data. The most common trap is acting within minutes on an unsourced claim, in either direction.
