FOMO

In short FOMO, or fear of missing out, is the urge to buy a fast-rising token because you fear being left behind, which often leads to poorly timed entries.

FOMO stands for fear of missing out. In crypto it describes the pull to buy a token mainly because its price is climbing and everyone around you seems to be profiting. The decision is driven by the chart and the crowd rather than by any view of what the project is or what it is worth.

It works through a feedback loop. A token rises, people post screenshots of gains, and the price move itself becomes the advertisement. New buyers pile in, which pushes the price higher and triggers more posts. Small tokens with thin liquidity are especially prone to this, because a modest amount of buying can move the price several percent in minutes, and every green candle makes waiting feel more costly.

The cost shows up in your entry price. By the time a move is loud enough to trigger FOMO, early buyers are often sitting on large gains and have a reason to sell into the new demand. You end up buying near a local top, paying more slippage on a thin pool, and frequently skipping basic checks like who holds the supply or whether liquidity is locked. Many rug pulls and pump-and-dump schemes depend on exactly this rush, because rushed buyers don't read contracts.

A few habits help. Decide your position size and exit before you buy, not after the price moves. Ask who is selling to you and why, and look at holder concentration and liquidity on a block explorer or DEX page. If you feel an urgency to act within minutes, treat that feeling as a signal to slow down, since a legitimate opportunity rarely disappears in the time it takes to check a contract. Missing one run is cheap compared with buying the top of it.
