Block explorer

In short A block explorer is a website for searching a blockchain's public data: transactions, wallet balances, token transfers, and smart contracts.

A block explorer is a website that lets you look up anything recorded on a blockchain. Every transaction, wallet balance, token transfer, and smart contract on a public chain is open data. The explorer turns it into readable pages that you search by wallet address, transaction hash, or token contract. Etherscan, BscScan, Basescan, and Solscan are the usual ones for Ethereum, BNB Chain, Base, and Solana.

Under the hood, the explorer runs nodes, reads every new block, and stores the results in a searchable database. Paste in a transaction hash and you see its status (success, failed, or pending), the block it landed in, the timestamp, sender, receiver, amount, and the fee paid. A wallet page shows balances and full history. A token page shows the contract address, total supply, transfers, and a list of holders.

For anyone buying small tokens, the explorer is how you verify claims instead of trusting them. If a swap did not show up in your wallet, the transaction hash tells you whether it failed or is still pending. Before you buy, you can compare the contract address on the project's official page with the one you are about to trade, since fake tokens copy names and tickers all the time. The holders tab shows whether a handful of wallets control most of the supply, and the deployer wallet's history shows what else that address has launched.

A few traps are worth knowing. Verified source code only means the published code matches what is deployed. It does not mean the code is safe. Labels like "Exchange" or "Burn Address" are tags added by the explorer, and an unlabeled wallet is not necessarily independent. Holder lists often include liquidity pool and exchange addresses, which can make concentration look worse or better than it is.

Also watch for lookalike explorer sites built to phish you. A real explorer only needs an address or hash to search, and it never needs you to connect a wallet or sign anything to read data. Bookmark the correct site rather than following links from chats or ads.
