NBA Signs Regulator Pact and Picks Kalshi and Polymarket as Prediction Market Partners

The NBA has signed an information-sharing agreement with the CFTC and named Kalshi and Polymarket its preferred prediction market exchanges. The move sets the league apart from the NFL, while the Supreme Court has been asked to settle whether federal or state authority governs sports event contracts.

What the NBA announced on Monday

The National Basketball Association said on Monday that it has signed an information-sharing agreement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). It also named Kalshi and Polymarket as its preferred prediction market exchanges, according to Cointelegraph and CoinDesk. The Block described the league as the third to sign a CFTC pact, saying the two sides agreed to put safeguards in place for the integrity of basketball in prediction markets.

Cointelegraph reported that the commercial side goes beyond a handshake with the regulator. Both exchanges will receive official NBA data from Sportradar, the league's designated data distribution partner, to settle authorized markets. They also gain rights to use NBA intellectual property and to run promotions in the United States.

The safeguards and the wider partner list

The league tied the commercial access to conduct rules. As quoted by CoinDesk, Kalshi said in a posting on its website that it and the NBA will pool data on integrity, flag questionable trading and work together on any probes. The deal covers the following points, according to the outlets.

  • NBA and team personnel are prohibited from trading NBA event contracts, per Cointelegraph and Kalshi's statement as relayed by CoinDesk.
  • Kalshi also pointed to restrictions on which markets are permitted.
  • The NBA widened its existing DraftKings agreement to include prediction markets, according to Cointelegraph.
  • The league expects to announce similar arrangements with other operators in the coming weeks, Cointelegraph reported.

Why leagues want a direct line to the regulator

Event contracts are simple yes-or-no trades on real-world outcomes, and sports results are among the most popular. As Decrypt noted, that popularity has moved game betting onto CFTC-regulated venues such as Kalshi and Polymarket. The core worry is familiar from traditional gambling: someone with nonpublic information could trade ahead of the public.

A memorandum of understanding gives a league and the regulator a formal channel for passing along suspicious activity. Decrypt reported that the NHL became the first major league to grant a prediction market a trademark license, while MLB's integrity agreement came alongside a deal with Polymarket. The NBA's version combines the regulator pact with commercial partnerships in one announcement.

The timing is sensitive for basketball. Decrypt recalled that an FBI operation in October 2025 resulted in the arrests of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and a coach, who were accused of involvement in gambling schemes, one of which centered on influencing game results. Those are allegations described by the outlet, and none of the four reports links that case directly to Monday's agreement.

How the outlets' accounts compare

The reports agree on the basics: a Monday announcement, a CFTC pact that follows MLB and the NHL, and an insider-trading focus. They differ in emphasis. Cointelegraph supplies the most operational detail, including the Sportradar data feed, the intellectual property rights and the DraftKings extension. CoinDesk adds statements from NBA executive Scott Kaufman-Ross and from Kalshi, and it frames the deal around the NFL's refusal to join.

Decrypt puts more weight on the regulatory backdrop, noting that the CFTC has recently moved to classify event contracts as swaps under its authority, a definition that leaves out casino-type gambling. Its account does not mention the preferred-exchange designations. The Block's piece was available only as a headline and summary, so it supports little beyond the third-league milestone and the Kalshi and Polymarket link.

CFTC Chairman Michael Selig called the NBA's decision "a responsible step" against abuses such as insider trading and fraud, a line carried by both Decrypt and CoinDesk. The outlets also describe the NFL's legal position slightly differently. Decrypt frames it as a court battle against Kalshi that has drawn the Supreme Court's attention, while Cointelegraph and CoinDesk say the NFL backed a petition asking the justices to step in.

The federal versus state dispute behind the deal

The agreements arrive while courts disagree about who regulates sports event contracts. Cointelegraph reported that in September the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals decided against Kalshi in litigation tied to Ohio and Tennessee, after the 9th Circuit had reached a comparable result. The 3rd Circuit, by contrast, let Kalshi keep operating in New Jersey while its appeal continues. CoinDesk counted three major federal rulings, two of which favored the states.

States are also acting on their own. According to Cointelegraph, Utah Attorney General Derek Brown filed a lawsuit against Kalshi on Oct. 20, accusing the platform of enabling unlawful betting in Utah starting in 2024. The state is seeking to recoup what Cointelegraph put at roughly $30 million to $60 million in profits that Kalshi and other defendants allegedly made.

A petition asking the Supreme Court to review the New Jersey dispute has the backing of 39 states and Washington, DC. The justices have not agreed to hear it. CoinDesk reported that the NFL argued in its filing that federal oversight has been lax and understaffed, a claim the CFTC's allies would likely contest.

What to watch next

The first open question is whether the NFL changes course. Decrypt and CoinDesk both stress that the league has so far declined an arrangement like the NBA's, and its court filing suggests a different strategy.

The second is whether the Supreme Court takes the New Jersey case. A grant would put the federal-state question on a single track, while a refusal would leave the split among appeals courts in place.

For platforms and project teams building event-contract products, the practical signal is what leagues now ask for. Based on the reports, those terms include data-sharing, bans on insider participation and a formal investigation channel. The NBA's promised announcements with other operators, and Blockchain.com's reported application to the CFTC to offer event contracts, will show how widely those terms spread.
